John Dickens

1785 - 1851


Charles Dickensīs father. Was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office at Portsmouth.
Later was transferred to London and then to Chatham, again to London to
Somerset House in 1822. "A jovial opportunist with no money sense."
Was arrested and imprisoned in the Marshalsea. Later became a parliamentary
reporter. His money matters worried Charles. In 1839 Dickens found for them
a cottage at Alphington, Devon.
Dickens depicted his father in the character of Wilkins Micawber in David
Copperfield.


He is buried with his wife Elizabeth
in Highgate cemetery
